Professor Keith McNeil is set to join the Clinical Excellence Division team as the new Assistant Deputy Director-General and Chief Medical Information Officer.
The new role is mainly responsible for leading Queensland’s eHealth program, working with key stakeholders to maximise the clinical and patient safety benefits associated with technology in the healthcare setting, while minimising risk.
Deputy Director-General Dr John Wakefield said Prof McNeil was a very good fit for the position. "He offers a wealth of both clinical and executive management experience [and] brings a rare and valuable combination of skills and experience to the role including being an internationally recognised transplant specialist."
"It is important we have the correct fit for the role as it requires someone who is highly knowledgeable from a clinical perspective and is able to act with agility and flexibility to pursue outcomes in a timely and strategic manner."
Prof McNeil has previously worked within Queensland Health as the Head of Transplant Services at The Prince Charles Hospital, CEO at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, and Health Service Chief Executive at Metro North. He will be leaving his position as National Health Service (NHS) Chief Clinical Information Officer to relocate back to Brisbane later this year.
His previous roles include Head of IT in the NHS, Chief Executive Officer at Addenbooke's Hospital and Cambridge University Hospital Foundation Trust.
"His knowledge of, and relationships within, the Queensland Health system combined with his impressive experience in healthcare delivery and eHealth will be a key asset in ensuring that the rollout of eHealth across our hospitals over the next few years will be done safely with maximum benefit for patients and clinicians," Dr Wakefield said.
