Sepsis is a devastating infection that kills more children than road traffic accidents. In just a few days Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service will commence trialling our newly developed paediatric sepsis clinical pathway.
A team of clinical experts from across Queensland who are members of the Statewide Paediatric Sepsis Working Group have spent the last six months building the pathway, including clinical leads for the project: Lady Cilento Children's Hospital Paediatric Intensivist Associate Professor Luregn Schlapbach (pictured; far right) and Dr Paula Lister (pictured; far left) from the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.
Dr Schlapbach said the pathway would assist clinicians in recognising and responding to children with sepsis. “Faster recognition and treatment for children with sepsis can save lives. The Paediatric Sepsis Pathway will support clinicians across the state to think 'could this be sepsis?' and to resuscitate children with sepsis using international best practice."
The pathway comes off the back of the Paediatric Sepsis Forum held last year to bring clinicians and consumers together to help set the direction for paediatric sepsis management in Queensland and the development of the pathway itself.
The paediatric sepsis project team is working alongside our adult sepsis project team which also had a new clinical pathway trialled by the Gold Coast. Both areas are set to participate in a Sepsis Collaborative at the end of the paediatric pathway trial.
