Dr Alex Markwell has been appointed Chair of the Queensland Clinical Senate—Queensland Health’s strategic clinician advisory body.
Alex is a Senior Staff Specialist Emergency Physician at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and former president of the Australian Medical Association Queensland.
She takes over from Dr David Rosengren, who was Chair for 6 years.
"It is a tremendous honour to have been appointed Chair of the Queensland Clinical Senate," Alex said.
"Over a number of years, I have followed the work of the Senate with great interest and watched it go from strength to strength, becoming one of the most respected and productive clinician bodies in the country.
"Under the leadership of Dr David Rosengren, the Senate has helped to identify real improvements in the way clinicians deliver care. In partnership with consumers, clinicians and managers, this has been translated into improved outcomes for patients
"I have a long interest in advocacy and improving patient care, and I see this role as a fantastic opportunity to advance these."
Alex will chair her first meeting in May when Senate members and guests consider the health and wellbeing of the workforce.
"I have a strong interest in clinician health and wellbeing," she said.
"It is imperative that the providers of healthcare are, themselves, accessing the care they need and enjoying good health.
"Research shows that the health and wellbeing of clinicians is inextricably linked to the health outcomes of patients."
