The first day of the Clinical Excellence Showcase 2019 has just wrapped up. Showcase lets us come together to recognise and celebrate people delivering remarkable healthcare improvements across Queensland Health.
Today we heard Dr Tim Duncan—an aeromedical retrieval specialist, a general anaesthetist and film maker—talk about the traumatic circumstances that led him to pursue a rewarding career with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Dr Duncan said he likes the variety offered in his rural generalist role and sees it as a way of repaying those who helped him when he needed it most.
Dr Michael Wagels, Dr Jay Wiper and Melanie Hickson spoke about SLAM, the Skin Lesion Assessment Management Clinic, where non-melanoma head and neck cancer patients can access a 3-step simplified treatment pathway. The clinic is located at Princess Alexandra Hospital.
CSIRO finished the day hypothesising what healthcare might look like in 20 years. Dr Claire Naughtin and Dr Stefan Hajkowicz asked 'Where are the emerging trends taking us?' 'What are the big unknowns when it comes to healthcare in Queensland?' 'Where can we mitigate future risks on the horizon?' But they said new technologies and new practices mean the future is looking bright.
Damien Searle—Director, Healthcare Improvement Unit—said the turn out for the event was impressive. 'It started off on such a powerful note,' he said. 'And I'm excited to see what’ll be covered on Friday. I'm sure it'll be just as inspiring as today. We're definitely in for a jam-packed second day.'
