The Healthcare Improvement Fellowship saw its cohort triple in 2019, with the 11 fellows coming from all over Queensland. The fellowship program uses a ‘virtual classroom’ to connect participants and holds several in-person residential workshops over the year.
The program’s focus is on creating future leaders in healthcare improvement for Queensland Health. Each fellow spends 12 months at 0.5 FTE developing depth across a broad range of topics related to improvement, including a strong foundation in complex systems science, human factors engineering, safety science, implementation and improvement, patient-centred care, and co-design. Fellows also get to engage with international thought leaders.

The program has been well-received internationally and was presented at the 2019 ISQua conference in South Africa. Following this, Satyan Chari, senior faculty, and Michael Tresillian were invited to speak at the Saudi Patient Safety International Patient Safety Conference and the G20 roundtable meeting on patient safety in December 2019. It has also helped facilitate a growing number of learning opportunities for a broader group of Queensland clinicians, such as:
- a meet the experts session with prominent human factor expert Prof Paul Salmon
- hosting the ‘healthcare excellence-by-design session’ at the 2019 QUT Asia-Pacific Change-by-Design Symposium.
Fellowship coordinators anticipate supporting a larger number of workshops, webinars and learning opportunities for Queensland Health staff this year.
